ColleenWelcome to Colleen's web site, version 5.0!

Colleen is an awesome kid who loves to read, do homework (and she isn't even in school yet) and play outside. She is an artist, philosopher and great mathematician. She is a very good photographer, too, who was recently introduced to a digital camera. The photo at the top of the page is a self-portrait.

Her favorite color is pink. She loves to wear dresses, play dress-up and play with dolls. She is all girl. However, she is also tough. She likes to get dirty, jump on the trampouline, rough house, pick up bugs and play soccer. Noone has ever told her not to do these things, so she loves them as well. Her girl idols are her cousins Ashley and Katelyn, who are gorgeous sports jocks. She adores all of her cousins — because she thinks the girls are beautiful and the boys are WILD! But she particularly talks about these two a lot, probably because they embody both of her favorite characteristics!

Currently, the blog below is updated by her parents. However, you should expect entries from her in the very near future.

We hope you also will take time to look at her photo album, which contains pictures that we update on rare occasions. New visitors might be interested in reading about Colleen's birth or her heart surgery, or seeing photos she took of her house.

Colleen Said:

Last night at dinner, Colleen asked if Mommy's hair was going to turn white. Rosie said that only happened when people got old. Colleen said, "But you are old."

Rosie grinned and said that happens when you get much older. Colleen said, "You're a lot older than you used to be."

Rosie changed the subject.

Today was Colleen's first day of school.

Right now, there are a lot of people saying, "Oh, my. Is she that old already?" I know that because most of them have said it to me.

We were very excited for her! She has been wanting to go to school for quite some time. She's been doing homework since April or May because she was jealous that the neighbor kid had homework. So, we make up homework and give it to her. Of course, she's been reading for more than a year, so I have to wonder if there will be anything for her to learn at school! I just want her to have fun. She has already told us she wishes school were on Saturday and Sunday, too. Let's hope that keeps up.

Here is a photo gallery of her first day.

Showing off her fancy new dress.

Showing off the Tinkerbell backpack. (You would if you had one.)

The bus she boards at day care. She is attending day care in the mornings (they do a kindergarten curriculum) and public school in the afternoons. The day care delivers her to school on this bus.

Colleen exiting the bus at school. Yep, I sure did. I followed the bus to school.

The teacher collects the kids as they arrive and escorts them to class. Times have changed from when they used to lock us out, no matter what the weather, until the bell rang.

Colleen with the neighbor, Georgina, as they get off the schoolbus. The bus can come into our neighborhood (due to the tiny roads), so we meet the kids at the entrance.

I think today Colleen learned how to swim underwater!

We were at the pool at Danville and we happened to run into our friends Lucien, Marek and Deb. Lucien and Marek, who are 5 and 3ish, were both ripping through the water like frogs. I think this inspired little Miss Thang.

Before today, she wouldn't jump off the side of the pool unless I was standing in front of her so close that she could crash into me and cause us both pain.

By the time we left the pool, she was jumping off the side into a shallow area (where her feet would touch) without me even in the pool or standing nearby. Then, after our friends left, we went to the shallow kiddie area where she started toodling around in a way that seemed very close to underwater swimming. I helped her out a bit, then saw she was ready to do it. I dragged her back to the three-foot depth and she did it! She swam to me, from probably 15 feet or so, many, many times, until they blew the whistle and we had to leave.

I'm actually really relieved. She has spent a lot of time in swimming lessons, although not this year. (We've been a tad busy!) I was pretty frustrated at all of the lessons she has had and still can't even float. However, I was suspecting it wasn't the fault of the lessons, but a hesitance on Colleen's part. The whole thing with her needing me around to jump into a pool that wasn't above her head is what convinced me of this. Anyway, when she started jumping in today, then swimming, it became obvious that all she needed was the right encouragement. I think seeing her two buddies, Lucien and Marek (who thinks Colleen is just hot stuff), both doing the fish thing was the inspiration she needed to lose her fear.

Yay, Colleen! You go girl.
